The meaning of etiquette & its importance

The Meaning of Etiquette: Why Good Manners Still Matter

When people hear the word ‘etiquette’, they often think of strict rules, posh accents, or old-fashioned behaviour. In reality, and as my career as a manners and etiquette coach has shown me, the real meaning of etiquette comes down to showing respect, kindness and consideration to other people. As such, good manners and etiquette help us to feel confident in any situation, whether at work, school, online, or at a dinner table with friends.

On this page, I’ll explain what etiquette is, why etiquette and good manners are so important today, and how learning modern etiquette can change the way you feel in everyday life. Alternatively, explore my classes or make an enquiry below.

Definition of etiquette

Children’s Manners & Etiquette: A Foundation for Life

So, what is etiquette?

In simple terms, etiquette is the code of behaviour that helps us treat other people with respect, courtesy and kindness. It is not to do with being perfect or ‘posh’; on the contrary, it’s about helping everyone feel comfortable and valued. Good manners and etiquette come out in how you speak, listen, dress, share space, and behave both online and in person.

Think of the definition of etiquette as:

‘The set of shared expectations and good manners that guide how we behave towards others in different situations.’

When we talk about etiquette and manners, we are talking about the everyday habits that make life smoother for everyone: saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, being on time, listening when others speak, and showing respect even when we disagree. These small acts of good manners and etiquette build trust, calm, and confidence, both for you and the people around you.

That said, the meaning of etiquette changes slightly depending on where you are: social etiquette at a party may look different from correct etiquette in a meeting or dining etiquette at a formal meal. The heart of etiquette, however, stays the same: respect, awareness, and above all, kindness.

We are lucky to have connected with her!

My family and I attended a four hour private session with Mrs. Akano, and it was lovely. She planned a beautiful day at the Strathmore Hotel. The session was focused around dining etiquette, but she tailored the session to also include deportment and interpersonal skills as per my request. I am so glad that we did this!

Mrs. Akano is knowledgeable, patient, and kind. After this experience, my whole family feels more confident in our skills. She left plenty of time for additional questions, and was able to respond to our needs in the moment. After the session, it made me even more passionate to learn about etiquette in general. We are lucky to have connected with her! Highly recommend.

Why etiquette?

Why Etiquette & Good Manners Are So Important Today

What’s your impression of me as you read this article? I appreciate we aren’t speaking face-to-face - though how you receive me through my words has a sizable impact on how you may, or may not, engage with me.

The same goes for first impressions generally, be they in public or online: they are made in seconds, in large part thanks to the world we live in, with its emphasis on ‘the now’: instant messaging, busy schedules, and constant notifications - across cultures, time zones and platforms.

In this environment, understanding the meaning of etiquette is more important than ever. This is because having good manners and etiquette helps you:

  • Build trust quickly in professional and social situations
  • Stay calm and confident when you are unsure what to do
  • Avoid awkwardness, misunderstandings and accidental offence
  • Show empathy and emotional intelligence in your relationships

It also helps you model respectful behaviour for children, teens and younger colleagues, depending on whether you are, respectively, a parent, adult, or professional.

The main takeaway? Good manners and etiquette have powerful, and wide-ranging, relevance and application in today’s world; an impact that not only bolsters your self-confidence, behaviour and image, but also—and arguably more importantly—how those around you receive and feel treated by you.

Benefits of etiquette

The Advantages of Manners and Etiquette

Once you understand what etiquette is, you recognise that the benefits are far greater than simply ‘looking polite’. Good manners and etiquette can transform how you feel about yourself and how others experience you.

In fact, it was because I witnessed this transformation first-hand on children and young adults earlier on in my career that I founded Polished Manners to begin with. It is also why I now help other children and teens, as well as adults and professionals, harness these same benefits via my etiquette classes.

Below are just some of the many benefits that good manners and etiquette can bring to your life:

Etiquette rules

Etiquette Rules in Daily Life: Simple Examples

Understanding good manners and etiquette does not mean committing to memory hundreds of etiquette rules. Adopting a few simple habits is usually enough to make a big difference to your confidence and life, and how those in your company find you.
Here are some basic examples of correct etiquette in everyday life:

  • Greetings: Stand up when appropriate, make eye contact and use a warm, clear greeting.
  • Introductions: Introduce people by name and add a short detail to help them connect.
  • Conversation: Listen actively, avoid talking over others, and keep your phone away.
  • Digital life: Be as polite in emails and messages as you would be face-to-face.
  • Dining etiquette: Use cutlery correctly, wait until everyone is served, and avoid speaking with your mouth full.
  • Public spaces: Respect queues, keep noise to a considerate level, and be mindful on public transport.

These are small habits, admittedly. But even some of the most well-heeled among us tend to forget them. Practising them together can have a notable impact on your presence and poise, and will reflect your understanding of the meaning of etiquette, as well as your respect for the people around you.

Origin of etiquette

The Origin and Evolution of Etiquette

The word ‘etiquette’ comes from the French word for ‘label’ or ‘ticket’. In the royal courts of France, notices - étiquettes - were used to remind visitors how to behave at official events. Over time, the origin of etiquette developed into a broader code of manners for society.

In the Victorian era, etiquette books taught people how to write letters, visit guests, dine correctly and behave in public. While some of those rules feel old-fashioned today, the principles behind them - respect, courtesy and consideration - still matter deeply.

Modern etiquette now includes areas the Victorians could never have imagined: emails, video calls, social media and global workplaces. Yet, at its core, the meaning of etiquette remains the same: treating others as you would wish to be treated, with kindness, respect, and care.

These are invaluable skills that will last a lifetime

My mother and I took a private etiquette course with Mrs. Akano. The course was tailored to what we wanted to improve upon. We learned so many principles that we are able to apply in both social and professional settings. We also had a wonderful lunch where we were able to apply the skills we learned. My mother and I are continually practicing even weeks after the course. These are invaluable skills that will last a lifetime.

I left the course very confident and well informed.

I attended the Polished Effects Course for Ladies in April 2022. It was very comprehensive, thorough and well rounded. The quality and delivery of the teaching was excellent, concise and clear; even moreso with PowerPoint presentations, real life demonstrations and props. I liked the fact that it was interactive and as a student, I was able to practice some of the lessons with observations from the tutor which were also recorded and forwarded later to me for future reference. I left the course very confident and well informed not just about proper etiquette practices but the valid reasons behind each one. It was a full day and money well spent, and I would recommend to everyone as a major self development goal. Thank you Laura!
